July 2017 - Freedom

freedom2.jpg

July brings us thoughts of freedom as we celebrate July 4th.  We realize how lucky we are to have been born in or moved to a country that allows freedom in so many areas.  Freedom of speech, religion, the press.  The freedom to be who we are. Though freedom for some still needs to be peacefully advocated for, we live in a society that allows us to do that. Maintaining this freedom in our country is imperative.

It is also important for us to cultivate freedom in our lives.  Yoga helps us find the space to be free.  Through regular practice we build a steady base that allows us to fly.  Yoga helps us stay in the present moment, not regretting the past nor worrying about the future.  When we take our yoga off the mat, we realize the lessons of staying present, finding your edge, breathing through sensation pertain to our lives in every moment.

In yoga, the first thing we do in each asana is to find a strong, steady seat or base.  This base allows us to move as freely as we can in the pose.  The same is true in life, when doing anything if we set a steady, strong seat or base - we are able to fly more easily.

For me, I can find that freedom more easily when I am in nature; hiking, running, camping, and yoga.  I feel more in touch with the universe when I am able to do anything of these things outdoors.  Try it.  Find an activity that you can do outside, notice your surroundings and be present in the moment.   Share your experience with us by telling us about your experience on our facebook page.

Namaste.

Full Moon SUP Yoga - June Newsletter

I love the full moon.  There is something that draws us to it.  When I see the full moon I feel energized and peaceful.

Throughout time, many cultures have had different beliefs about the full moon and its effect on people.  Native American Culture has moon signs similar to the more popular sun astrological signs.  Religion and spiritual beliefs have believed that the full moon has powerful energy and that is what affects people. You have probably heard teachers or emergency room personnel say that things are a bit crazier when there is a full moons.  Anecdotal stories seem to indicate this is true.  While studies have not been able to statistically prove this, and we know that the moon's gravitational pull does not affect enclosed water like that in the brain, it is hard to believe that there is nothing to the idea that the energy of the moon is not real.

So many stories from different cultures over such a long period of time seem to point to truth in the moon's power.  Often ancient ideas have been shown to be true, after science has said they are wrong.  We in the west are just now turning to acupressure, acupuncture and other eastern medical practices.  Recent studies have shown how helpful meditation and yoga can be for those struggling with chronic pain or a chronic disease.  Many believe that the energy from a full moon allows us the opportunity to harness that force.  It magnifies emotion - good and bad.  Many spiritual paths recommend keeping positive thoughts, envisioning your dream manifesting and meditating.  Some also encourage bathing in the light of the moon and being out in nature.

With that in mind, I invite you to join us for a Full-Moon SUP (Stand-Up Paddle-board) Yoga on June 9th.

Namaste.

May 2017 Newsletter

It's hard to believe that it is already May!  May is the time that everything starts to bloom and grow.  It's time that we start to open windows and enjoy the outdoors.  In the beginning of May we celebrate our mothers and at the end of May we celebrate those no longer with us.   Many also celebrate graduations.

It is a time for us to look at how we have grown personally through the work we have done through yoga or another path.  Take the time to recognize your effort and appreciate the changes.  Enjoy where you are now!

Happy Spring Equinox!!

om flower.jpg

Happy March in Michigan!  Although the weather looks a lot like our picture on the homepage, starting today our days will start to get longer.  And sometime soon, spring will come and stay.  It feels like it's been here a few times already this year.

This is a great time to de-clutter your house and your mind.  Do a little spring cleaning in your house or a little mental spring cleaning.

At Eclipse, we are spring cleaning our SUPs and getting ready for the beautiful weather that is on the way,

Resolution Reboot

reboot picture.jpg

Studies have shown that many people stop working on New Year's resolution after about 6 weeks.  Has this happened to you?  Have you stopped or slowed down on your resolution.

Now is the time to re-examine your resolution and set a new or better defined goal.  Think about your original goal.  Here are two ways to become more motivated to reboot your resolution.

1.) Was it a SMART  (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based) goal?

Often we set vague or unrealistic goals and that can demotivate.  Goals such as "I'm going to eat better" can be broken down so we don't feel disheartened the first time we eat a sweet or a chip.  Examples of breaking this down are:  I'm going to add one serving of veggies every day for a month.  I'm going to cook one more dinner at home each week.  Maybe you add one goal a month for the year.

An example of an unrealistic goal may be to lose 50 pounds in 3 months. While that sounds exciting and you would be thrilled with the results.  That is setting the bar very high.  You may have to change a log of things in your life to make this happen.  Maybe set a goal for each month to lose 1-3% of your weight.  Again break it down as you go.  Maybe you start with adding veggies to each meal, ensuring one half of your plate is filled with greens, having an apple for a snack or some other way to better your eating habits.  At the same time you may add an exercise goal.  This would depend on your current exercise program.  Just add little by little.

Looking at goals in this way helps you stay motivated by all the little and big victories along the way!

2.) Examine your motivation.  What was your motivation for setting your original goal?  Is your motivation the same now?  Does your goal serve your motivation.

Take a look at why you set the goal in the first place.  Let's say the motivation for getting into shape is to be able to be more active with your children.  Did you start out with such great exercise plans that you now have no time with your kids?  This is working a bit against your goal.  Perhaps look at the balance of your life and see how you can fit in time with family as well as a new work out routine.  Maybe instead of spending an hour at the gym, you take a walk with your children.  Maybe change the time you exercise so you don't lose as much at home time.  If we ensure our actions serve ourmotivation, it helps us be successful!

After reflection, you may decide to change your goal (or steps to realize the goal) completely.  That is fine.  No one says you have to stick to something that doesn't serve you.

As you strive for your goal, remember to be compassionate to yourself.  If a friend was on a diet and had McDonald's for lunch one day; would you call her a failure, tell her she may as well not try anymore?  Of course not, you would probably say. "I know you are really pressed for time today and you feel bad about your lunch.  But don't feel bad, you've been doing such a great job.  Tomorrow you'll be back on track."  Try saying that same thing to yourself when you do something you feel sets you back on your goal.

Be kind to yourself as you work to reach your goals.

    New Year; New Beginnings

Eclipse is excited about the year to come.  A new partnership at Eclipse allows for more creativity, more offerings and of course more yoga and meditation.

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions.  This year, here at Eclipse we are not making resolutions, but setting an intention for the year.  We have found that 5 minutes of meditation a day, help us keep that intention in mind.

At the beginning of the year, many people resolve to get healthier, lose weight, relive stress, and many more.  All are great goals.  To be successful, the goal must be reachable.  We often create unreachable goals, for example, I will lose 50 pounds in 3 months.  And when this doesn’t happen, we get discouraged.

Setting an intention for the year can be rewarding.  Your intention can be your goal, or it can complement your goal.  If your goal is to eat clean; an intention that could complement this is to be kind to yourself during the goal.  If you don’t eat clean, don’t beat yourself up.  Treat yourself as you would treat a beloved friend.  Say to yourself the same wisdom you would offer a friend who was being hard on themselves.

Whatever your intention, meditation can help keep you focused.  In just 5-minutes a day, you can help focus your mind.  Meditation is observing yourself and your thoughts.  Yes, I said observing your thoughts.  The goal of meditation is NOT to have a blank mind.  If you think you can’t meditate because you can’t clear your mind, remember that is not the goal.

Sign up for our newsletter and receive a 5-minute meditation that you can use daily to help you focus and relieve stress.  You can meditate whenever it suits you; first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, before a big meeting, in the evening when you return home, or any other time that is right for you.

We look forward to seeing you this year!
